Why Your Legs Feel Heavy by Evening — and Lighter Again by Morning

You notice it around seven in the evening. You take off your socks and there's a ring pressed into each ankle, deeper than it has any business being. Your shoes felt fine at nine that morning and they don't now. Your legs feel like they're carrying something.

And then you sleep, and by breakfast it's gone. Ankles normal. Socks fine. Nothing to point at.

That daily round trip is the most useful clue you have, and almost nobody treats it as one. It rules a lot of things out, and it points at something specific.

Swelling that arrives across the day and clears overnight is a transport pattern. Something is going into the tissue faster than it's being carried back out — and lying flat for eight hours fixes it, because lying flat removes the thing that was slowing the return.

The part of circulation nobody explains

Most people picture circulation as one loop: heart pushes blood out, blood comes back. That's the arterial half, and the heart is a genuinely excellent pump, so the trip down to your feet is not the problem.

1. The veins, and the pump in your calf

Blood returning from your feet has to climb roughly a metre uphill. Veins handle this with one-way valves plus an external pump: the calf muscle. Every step you take squeezes the deep veins and pushes a slug of blood upward, and the valves stop it falling back.

Why the ankles, and why the evening

How to judge whether anything is working

Measure, don't remember. Memory is useless here because the thing you're tracking changes by the hour.

Take a tape measure to the narrowest part of your ankle at the same time every evening — say, an hour before bed — and write the number down. Three weeks of that tells you more than three months of impressions.
