Water Retention in the Legs and Feet — What It Actually Is
Puffy face in the morning, puffy ankles at night, and the scale two pounds up for no reason you can name. That is one story, not three, and gravity is what links them.
The word “retention” does a lot of quiet damage. It suggests your body is hoarding water it should have got rid of — which points people straight at drinking less, or at a diuretic, and both of those are usually the wrong first move.
Here is the more accurate picture. About two thirds of the water in you sits inside cells. Most of the rest sits in the spaces between cells, and a smaller share is the fluid part of your blood. What people call water retention is a shift in that middle compartment — the interstitial space — not extra water arriving from outside.
You did not gain the water. You moved it — out of the vessels and into the tissue. That is why a two-pound overnight jump on the scale is possible, and why it can be gone by the following morning.
Where the fluid actually goes
Capillaries are not sealed pipes. They leak, deliberately, along their whole length. That leak is how oxygen, glucose and everything else gets from blood into tissue.
Two forces decide how much leaks. Pressure inside the vessel pushes fluid out. Protein in the blood — albumin, mostly — pulls it back in. In a normal day those two nearly balance, and the small surplus that ends up in tissue is collected by the lymphatic system and returned.
Tip that balance even slightly and the surplus grows. More pressure inside — from standing, from heat, from salt drawing water into the bloodstream — and more comes out. Less protein pulling it back, or a lymphatic system running slowly, and less goes home.
The clue almost nobody uses: puffy face, puffy ankles
This is the part worth sitting with, because it is the piece that makes the whole thing legible.
If you wake with a puffy face and slightly tight rings, and by evening your face is fine but your ankles are marked and your shoes are tight — that is not two problems. It is one volume of fluid being redistributed by gravity twice a day.
